LAN File Transfer — Send Files Over WiFi

Transfer files between devices on the same WiFi network using your browser. A six-digit code pairs the devices, then files stream directly peer-to-peer via WebRTC — nothing is uploaded.

Only the six-digit pairing handshake uses a small server. Files stream directly between browsers on the same WiFi and never touch a server.

What is this tool?

This LAN file transfer tool sends files between two devices on the same WiFi or local network, straight from browser to browser. It works across phones, laptops, and different operating systems, with no app to install. Choose Send Files, pick one or more files of any size (or type a note or link), and a six-digit code with a QR code appears. On the other device, scan the QR code or choose Receive Files and enter the code. The receiver accepts or declines after seeing the names and total size, then the files stream over a direct WebRTC connection in 64 KB chunks with speed and time-left readouts. The screen is kept awake during the transfer. A small Wivrix server only relays the pairing handshake for the six-digit code. Your files never pass through it. Codes expire after two minutes.

How to Use

  1. Open the tool on both devices, which must be on the same WiFi or local network.
  2. On the sending device, choose Send Files and click or drag files onto the picker.
  3. Read the six-digit code shown under Give this code to the other device, or scan its QR code or open the share link on the other device. It expires in 2:00.
  4. On the receiving device, choose Receive Files, type the six digits, and click Connect. The QR code and link connect automatically.
  5. The receiver sees the file names and total size and taps Accept. Watch the progress, speed and time left; images, audio and video can be previewed on the receiver.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do my files go through a server?

No. The six-digit code is used to exchange connection details through a small server. The files themselves travel directly between the two browsers over WebRTC, which is encrypted.

Why won't the devices connect?

Both devices must be on the same local network, because the tool uses no relay or STUN servers. Guest WiFi or networks that isolate clients from each other can block the connection; if that happens, use WAN File Transfer, which can relay over the internet. Also check that the code has not expired.

Is there a file size limit?

The tool sets no size limit and sends files in chunks. In browsers that support a save-file dialog or streaming download, large files are written to disk as they arrive. Otherwise the file is held in memory until it finishes.
