What is this tool?
This word counter shows live statistics for any text you type, paste or drop in as a .txt file. Words are counted with your browser's Unicode word segmenter, so Chinese, Japanese, accented and non-Latin text is counted correctly. The sidebar shows words, characters, sentences, reading, speaking and typing time, and page count. Platform limits show the room left for an X post (280), meta title (60), meta description (160), SMS and more. Keyword density lists the top 1-, 2- and 3-word phrases, Sentences finds your longest sentence, and Readability gives a Flesch score for English. Your draft is saved only in this browser.
How to Use
- Type, paste or drop a .txt file into Your text. The counts update as you type.
- Read the sidebar (below the box on phones) for words, characters, reading time and pages.
- Check Platform limits to see how much room is left for a post, title, description or SMS.
- In Keyword density, switch between 1, 2 and 3 words to find repeated phrases.
- Set a Word goal to track progress, or press Copy stats summary to share the numbers.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are words counted?
Your browser's Intl.Segmenter splits the text into words, which also works for languages written without spaces, such as Chinese and Japanese. Hyphenated words and contractions like well-known and don't count as one word, and numbers count as words. Punctuation and lone dashes do not.
Does the character count include spaces?
Characters includes spaces and line breaks, and counts an emoji or accented letter as one character. Characters (no spaces) shows the count with all whitespace removed.
How are reading time and pages calculated?
Reading time uses 238 words per minute, speaking time 150 and typing time 40. Pages assume about 500 words per single-spaced page.
How does the SMS limit work?
Plain text fits 160 characters in one SMS, or 153 per part when it is split. An emoji or other non-GSM character switches the message to Unicode, which fits 70 characters, or 67 per part.
