What is this tool?
This CSV to JSON converter turns spreadsheet exports into JSON and JSON arrays back into CSV. Paste into the input pane or drop a .csv, .tsv or .json file on it; input that starts with [ or { is treated as JSON, anything else as CSV, or you can force a direction. The parser follows RFC 4180, so quoted fields may contain commas, doubled quotes and line breaks. The delimiter (comma, semicolon, tab or pipe) is detected automatically or set by hand. Numbers, true, false, null and embedded JSON can be converted to real values, duplicate headers are renamed instead of overwritten, and dotted headers such as address.city become nested objects (and nested objects become dotted columns when exporting CSV). Switch the output to Table to check the rows, then copy or download .json or .csv. Conversion runs locally in your browser.
How to Use
- Paste CSV or JSON into the input pane, press Open file, or drop a file on it.
- Check the detected delimiter and the First row is the header option. Use More options for the JSON shape, indent, quote and escape characters.
- Watch the output update as you type, or press Convert (Ctrl+Enter). Switch the output to Table to check the rows.
- Press Copy or Download. When converting CSV to JSON, Clean .csv saves the parsed rows as standard comma-separated CSV.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my CSV have the wrong columns?
The delimiter may not match your file. Auto-detect looks at the first lines and picks comma, semicolon, tab or pipe; if it guesses wrong, choose the delimiter yourself. Also check First row is the header: when it is off you get arrays of values instead of objects with named keys.
Are numbers and booleans converted?
Yes, by default. Parse numbers turns 42 and 3.5 into numbers, but keeps values like 007 and very large IDs as text so nothing is lost. Parse true, false, null, [ ] and { } turns those into JSON values. Quoted fields stay text, except a quoted [ ] or { } value that is valid JSON, so arrays exported by this tool come back as arrays. Untick either option to keep every field as a string.
Can a CSV field contain line breaks?
Yes. A field wrapped in quotes may contain line breaks, delimiters and doubled quotes (""), as described in RFC 4180. When exporting CSV, such values are quoted the same way, so they survive a round trip.
How are nested JSON objects written to CSV?
With Nested objects ↔ dotted columns on, {"address": {"city": "Paris"}} becomes a column named address.city. Converting that CSV back to JSON rebuilds the nested object. Arrays are written as JSON text in one cell.
