Why both units are still in use
Digital storage has a genuine ambiguity: 1 GB can mean 1,024 MB (the binary sense your operating system uses) or 1,000 MB (the decimal sense drive manufacturers print on the box). This page uses the binary values, which is why a 1 TB drive shows up as roughly 931 GB once it is plugged in. Nothing is missing — the two sides are simply counting differently.
Mistakes worth avoiding
Do not mix bits and bytes. Broadband is sold in megabits per second and files are measured in megabytes, so a 100 Mb connection downloads at about 12.5 MB per second, not 100. The eight-to-one difference is why a download always looks slower than the advertised speed.
