Spending across this pair
Most people meet this conversion while travelling or shopping abroad rather than at a bureau de change, and the expensive moment is no longer the airport kiosk — it is the card terminal. When a shop or cash machine offers to charge you in EUR instead of GBP, that is dynamic currency conversion, and the rate applied is set by the terminal operator rather than by your bank. It is routinely 3 to 6 percent worse than the mid-market rate above. Declining it and paying in the local currency is almost always cheaper.
Cash machines abroad apply the same trick, and often add their own withdrawal fee on top of whatever your bank charges. Taking out fewer, larger amounts costs less than several small ones when a flat fee is involved. It is worth checking your own card's foreign transaction fee before travelling: some charge nothing, some charge around 3 percent on every purchase, and the difference over a two-week trip is larger than most people expect.
For a rough sense of prices while you are out, round the rate above to something you can multiply in your head and accept the error. You are deciding whether a meal is expensive, not filing accounts, and a few percent either way will not change the answer.
About these two currencies
The euro is shared by 20 countries, so a single rate covers a great deal of Europe — but not the UK, Switzerland, Sweden, Poland or Norway, each of which keeps its own currency. Sterling is quoted the opposite way round to most pairs: markets say how many dollars a pound buys, not the reverse. It is also one of the oldest currencies still in use.
What rate is this?
This is the mid-market rate — the midpoint between what buyers and sellers are quoting on the wholesale currency market. It is the rate you see quoted in the news, and the honest baseline to compare offers against. It is not the rate you will be given.
Why your bank gives you less
Banks and money transfer services build their profit into the exchange rate itself rather than charging it as a visible fee. A typical bank transfer is marked up 2% to 4% against the mid-market rate, and airport bureaux are routinely 8% to 12% worse. On EUR 1,000 that difference is real money, and it is invisible unless you know the mid-market rate to compare against — which is what this page is for.
Before you convert a meaningful amount, check the quoted rate against the figure above. If a provider is more than about 1% away from it, another provider will beat them.
Common questions
How often does this rate update?
Daily. Currency markets move continuously, so treat this as a reference point rather than a live trading quote — for anything time-sensitive, check the rate at the moment you transact.
Can I convert a different amount?
Type any amount into the calculator above and it converts as you type. The table is there for quick reference at common amounts.
Is this rate good enough for sending money home?
It is the number to negotiate against, not a rate you can transact at. Compare two or three transfer providers against it; the spread between the best and worst is usually larger than any fee they advertise.
