How to Use the Unit Converter

  1. Pick a category — length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, storage or time.
  2. Type the value you want to convert in the left-hand box.
  3. Choose the unit you are converting from, and the unit you want the answer in.
  4. The result appears instantly, along with a table of common conversions you can copy.
  5. Use the swap arrows to reverse the direction without retyping anything.

How accurate are these conversions?

Every factor here is the internationally agreed exact value rather than a rounded approximation. One inch is defined as exactly 0.0254 metres and one pound as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, so converting there and back returns your original number. Results are displayed to between two and six decimal places depending on magnitude, but the underlying calculation keeps full precision.

What is the difference between US and UK measures?

They differ most in volume. A US gallon is 3.785 litres while a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres — about 20% larger. US and UK pints differ for the same reason. This matters when following recipes: a British pint of milk is noticeably more than an American one. Both are listed separately so you never have to guess which one a recipe means.

Why does temperature work differently?

Length and weight units are simple multiples of each other, so converting is one multiplication. Temperature scales have different zero points, so they need an offset as well: Fahrenheit starts 32 degrees below Celsius zero and Kelvin starts 273.15 degrees below it. That is why 0°C is 32°F but 0 metres is still 0 feet.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged or stored on a server, and the tool keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
