How often are the rates updated?

Rates refresh daily from a public exchange-rate feed, and the timestamp of the data you are seeing is shown under the converter. Currency markets move continuously during trading hours, so a rate that is hours old can drift, particularly for volatile or thinly traded pairs. For a large transfer, confirm the live rate with your bank or provider at the moment you transact.

Why is the rate I get from my bank different?

The rate here is the mid-market rate — the midpoint between what buyers and sellers are offering, and the figure you see quoted in news reports. Banks and exchange bureaux add a margin to that rate, typically between 0.5% and 4%, and may add a separate fixed fee. That spread is how they make money on the transaction, so the rate you actually receive will always be slightly worse than the mid-market rate shown here.

How do cross-rates work?

Exchange rates are published against a single base currency, usually the US dollar. To convert between two other currencies — say pounds to rupees — the calculation goes via the dollar: convert pounds to dollars, then dollars to rupees. This is exactly how the currency market itself works for less common pairs, and it is why the numbers here agree with major financial sites.

Can I use this for tax or accounting?

Use it for estimates rather than filings. Tax authorities generally require a specific official rate — often the central bank rate on the transaction date or an annual average — and will not accept a mid-market figure from a website. Check which reference rate your jurisdiction mandates, and keep the documentation your bank provides for the actual converted amount.
