Step on a scale, divide weight by height squared, and you get a body mass index number that clinics and apps quote constantly. It is fast, free, and comparable across populations—but it cannot see muscle, bone density, or where fat sits. Body fat percentage answers a different question: how much of you is adipose tissue versus lean mass?

Neither metric alone defines health. Used together with context—age, activity, waist size, medical history—they give a clearer picture than arguing which single number wins.

What BMI actually measures
